Assessment and Evaluation

The GDCI school policy on late and missed assignments and academic dishonesty aligns with the Avon Maitland District School Board’s Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting Principles and Procedures as well as the Ministry of Education’s Growing Success 2010 Assessment and Evaluation document.  It outlines the following student responsibilities and consequences:

Academic Dishonesty

An Academic Disciplinary School Team will determine the consequences for cheating and plagiarizing. Consequences for academic dishonesty are not limited to, but may include one or a number of the following:

  • discussion with the teacher and/or principal about the importance of academic honesty;
  • reduction in the student’s development of the learning skills and work habits (e.g. from Good to Satisfactory);
  • resubmit the assignment; 2 complete an alternative assignment;
  • retake the test; 2 receive a mark penalty on the assignment;
  • loss of credit (requires consultation with Regional Superintendent.

A variety of methods, which are appropriate to the subject, grade and course type will be taught to help students avoid plagiarism/cheating. These lessons will also outline how plagiarism/cheating are detected.

Providing evidence of learning within established timelines (Grades 7-12)

Procedure for Late Assignments: Grade 7 to 12

Situation 1:
  A student misses an assignment deadline for the first time in a course

  • A GDCI Late Assignment letter generated by the teacher, is sent home to parents/guardians to sign and return the next day to the originating teacher.  The letter explains that a mark deduction of up to 10% may apply for future late assignments.
  • A new deadline is agreed to between student and teacher.
  • No mark deduction when the assignment is handed in.

Situation 2:  A student misses an assignment deadline for the second time in a course or has missed the agreed upon deadline from situation 1.

  • A second GDCI Late Assignment letter is sent home to parents/guardians to sign and return the next day to the originating teacher.  The letter indicates whether a mark deduction of up to 10% will apply for that assignment. Then students will attend a supervised Study Hall period at lunch to complete the assignment.

Situation 3:
 A student misses the determined final deadline for the assignment or chooses not to attend Study Hall to complete the assignment.

  • Student receives an Incomplete and a letter home to parents/guardians to sign and return the next day to the originating teacher.  The letter explains the impact of receiving an “incomplete” and what may occur if further “incompletes” are accumulated in a class.
  • For heavily weighted summative assessments, students may be required to attend future lunch time supervised Study Hall periods to assist in finishing projects to clear “incompletes”.

Procedure for Missed Test: Grades 7 to 12

Situation 1: Excused absence

  • When a student will be absent on a test day due to an excused absence which is known in advance (sports / clubs / school related activity / school field trip / parent approved absence or vacation / scheduled medical appointment) the student will inform the teacher at least one class in advance of the test that the absence is going to occur. The teacher and student will determine the make up test date and the student will complete the test at lunch in Study Hall.
  • No mark deduction applies if the student writes the test as arranged with the teacher.
  • If a student misses the assigned makeup time to write the test, the student will not have the opportunity to write the test.  The student will receive an “incomplete” and a letter will be sent home to be signed by the parent/guardian and returned the next day to the originating teacher, explaining the impact of receiving an Incomplete and what may occur if further “incompletes” are accumulated in a class.

Situation 2:  Unexpected absence

  • If a student is absent on a test day because of an excused absence due to unforeseen illness / medical / other circumstances the student will inform the teacher at the earliest opportunity that the absence on a test day occurred due to illness / medical reasons.

Situation 3: Unexcused absence

  • If a student is absent on a test day due to an unexcused absence, or a known absence but did not inform the teacher in advance, the student will not have the opportunity to write the test.  An incomplete will be recorded and a letter will be sent home to be signed by the parent/guardian and returned the next day to the originating teacher, explaining the impact of receiving an “incomplete” and what may occur if further “incompletes” are accumulated in a class.
  • Depending on the circumstances, teachers may consider giving students a chance to write the test at an agreed upon date, at lunch in Study Hall.  If the student does not write the test at that time, no further opportunities will be given to write the test, an incomplete will be recorded and a letter will be sent home to be signed by the parent/guardian and returned the next day to the originating teacher, explaining the impact of receiving an “incomplete” and what may occur if further “incompletes” are accumulated in a class.
