A group of 23 GDCI students went to the Ontario Science Centre to attend the DNA fingerprinting program on Thursday, March 23. They learned about DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, and gel electrophoresis. By the end of the program they were able to determine their genotype for the D1S80 locus and solve various problems using their new knowledge including DNA forensics and paternity testing. On their breaks they got to explore the Science Centre exhibits exploring all aspects of science from poisonous blue frogs to meteorites! This met the requirements for SHSM advanced training in a technology and experiential learning.
