In April, Goderich District Collegiate Institute hosted a successful and engaging Living Library event. The event featured speakers, referred to as “living books,”—representing 12 different topics, who shared their career journeys and life experiences with students.
Grade 7 and 8 students selected four speakers they were most interested in and rotated through sessions throughout the morning. The diverse lineup of “living books” included:
-
A local author and historian
-
An OPP officer
-
A member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and their sister
-
A funeral director
-
A hairstylist and business owner
-
A pilot who built their own plane
-
Individuals on the path to recovery from addiction
-
A store manager living with ADHD and a learning disability
-
A radio host
Several AMDSB staff members also participated, including the Indigenous Lead, Indigenous Graduation Coaches, a Mental Health Counsellor, and an International Education Coordinator who brought two international students to share their experiences.
Students, staff, and volunteers all enjoyed the event, and enthusiasm is already building for next year’s Living Library!
